Mumbai. The equity market got a break on Tuesday, as the BSE Sensex fell by 53.73 points to settle at 40,248.23 pts, snapping a winning a streak of last seven sessions. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) too eased by 24.10 points to 11,917.20.

With yesterday's historic high at 40,301.96 points, the day opened on a positive at 40,445.67, rising by 144 points. It rallied by 365 points to 40,466.55 day high. Later, it tumbled down by 248 points to 40,053.55 days low.
In late, trade recovered from day low figure and settled at 40,248.23, sliding by 53.73 points from its last close.The Nifty registered day high and low at 11,978.95 and 11,861.90 points respectively.
The sectoral indices like Materials, Energy, IT, Bankex, Auto, Oil and Gas and Realty slipped. In scrips, IbdusInd Bank, Sun Pharma, Infosys, Tata Steel and M & M went in red.
The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.80 pc while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index fell 0.32 pc.
The market breadth was negative. On the BSE, 1017 shares rose and 1462 shares fell. A total of 177 shares were unchanged. In Nifty 50 index, 23 stocks advanced and 27 stocks declined.
Overseas, most European shares were trading higher as investors awaited updates on a potential U.S.-China trade deal and monitored global economic developments.
