Guwahati: Around 20 people have died in a series of landslides that took place in Assam today. The dead are largely from three different districts of the Barak valley region in southern Assam. Several others are injured. Rescue teams have been rushed to the sites.
Among those dead are seven people in Cachar district, seven in Hailakandi district and six in Karimganj district, sources said.Most of the deaths occurred in three families and 11 children and three women are among the dead.
The region has been experiencing heavy rains for the last couple of days.
The northeastern state is already struggling with massive floods which have affected around 3.72 lakh people. The Goalpara district is the worst hit, followed by Nagaon and Hojai.
Six people have died in the floods and 348 villages are under water. Crops over nearly 27,000 hectares have been damaged, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has said.
Assam chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has issued orders to the districts administration to step up rescue and relief operations following the landslides and provide a one-time compensation to the families that lost their relatives.
