Islamabad. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday granted bail to former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif on medical grounds for eight weeks in the Al Azizia case.
The bail plea was filed by Nawaz's brother and PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif and the verdict, withheld for a short duration, was announced on Tuesday afternoon.
A two-member bench, comprising Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani, in their order, said that two surety bonds of Rs 2 million each will have to be submitted to the court to secure Nawaz's release. The court further announced that for an extension in bail, the Punjab government should be approached.
Mr Shariff, also procured bail on medical grounds in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case from the Lahore High Court.
The 69-year-old former premier, was first taken to the hospital last week when his blood platelet count dropped to dangerous levels, where, during under going treatment, he also suffered a minor heart attack on Saturday.
